Elks Temple - Preserving the Core

Exit133 made sure to catch tonight’s Design Review of the Elks Temple by the Landmark Preservation Commission tonight. The central topic? Whether the two additions made in 1937 and 1948 on the north side of the building deserved to be protected.

The two additions added racquetball courts to the building and expanded their kitchen. During the presentation, Jim Merritt of Merritt Arch asked that the two additions be approved for demolition and that the owners could stabilize and protect the building to prevent vandalism, as it would sit vacant for “the next year or so.” That request was unanimously approved by the Landmark Commission.

With that out of the way, expect to see some real work begin on the Elks Temple soon. Glad to see progress! Now to get through “the next year or so” …
