Emergency Food Network Auction and Dinner

We just got back from a rather inspiring dinner and auction for the Emergency Food Network.  Who’s the EFN?

The Emergency Food Network (EFN) of Pierce County is the only agency of its kind in the country with the ability to plant, harvest, transport, process and distribute food to low-income children, seniors, and families in need.  It accomplishes this through the Distribution Center, the Mother Earth Farm, the Cannery Project, and the Orchard…

A few highlights from the evening include:

  • Watching as the EFN made $2100 from six cakes from Dad’s bakery.  $600 for the Boston Cream cake alone.  That must be one good cake…
  • Witnessing a tremendous battle over auction item # 12 – a hoe-down event for 50 – between two of our friends (they didn’t know each other).  One of the two bidders had won this particular item the last two years and didn’t seem interested in losing it this year.  Hey, we could get invited either way… keep bidding!  I think he paid $750 last year, but $2600 this year.  Amazing.
  • The true highlight was the raise the paddle event – You CAN Make a Difference – item # 17.  This was the opportunity for everybody in the room to give to EFN.  All one had to do was raise their number.  The auction started high and went down.  At $5000, three people raised their paddles.  As it went down to $2500, $1000, $500, and lower, it became apparent that this would be a good year.  In the end, this one ‘auction item’ brought in $60,875.  Very impressive.

It was amazing to see 350 people in one room so dedicated to making our community a better place.  A trip to Mexico.  A trip to Maui.  Trips to Arizona.  Multiple ways to enjoy good food at restaurants and in private homes.  It wasn’t about the merchandise and trips.  It was truly about the people that ultimately receive the food we enable through events like this.  While we didn’t win any of the items we bid on, it was still a good time… Although we hear there’s a sleeper sofa in Cabo that might be available.
