Environmental Issues, Environmental Priorities - Tonight

The University of Puget Sound, Mountaineers, and the Washington Environmental Council have partnered to provide a multi-part lecture course designed to give participants the tools and awareness they can use to protect the natural resources of our region. The series has been designed to support the upcoming 2010 environmental legislative focus as identified by the Environmental Priorities Coalition.

Lectures will be held Wednesday evenings through November 18th. Each lecture is designed to stand-alone. So, come to one. Come to all.

Tonight: November 4th, 2009

Budget Preservation Priority presented by Bill Robinson from the Nature Conservancy

One of the three Environmental Priorities for the 2010 legislative session is the state budget.  It is unusual for the Environmental Community to select the budget as a priority issue. However, given the budget for natural resource agencies was cut over two times larger than any other function of state government this issue cannot be ignored. Faced with additional budget deficits in 2010 the basic environmental protections that support our clean water and air, and the wide array of wildlife that we all rely on for our quality life are being threatened.  Raising the awareness of the budget as a community priority enables other organizations, public activists, state citizens to demonstrate to elected officials a broad public support for the value of our natural resources.
