Façades: Transformative Potential?

“Extreme Make-Over: Façade Improvement Projects” is the subject of the upcoming edition of Conversations Re: Tacoma, the first of the 2012 lecture series.  This Thursday, September 27th, a panel will convene to take on the idea of the potential for façade improvements to act as a catalyst for change in neighborhoods.

Learn how inexpensive façade improvement projects can spark new energy in a neighborhood, bring under-utilized buildings back to life and economic rewards to business owners.

Conversations RE: Tacoma is an annual series of lectures aimed at stimulating an informed public dialogue around issues of urban design and planning.

The goal of this lecture series is to encourage public engagement with urban design issues, with specific discussion of how to take action and implement change.

Conversations RE: Tacoma – Extreme Make-Over: Façade Improvement Projects
When:  Thursday, September 27, 6:30 – 8:00 p.m.
Where:  New Frontier Lounge, 301 East 25th Street
Cost:  $7.50 per lecture, or $20 for all 3
Details:  www.RETacoma.com

We’ll have to wait until the 27th to hear what the panel of experts has to say, but what’s your first reaction to the idea of the transformative power of the façade?

The restoration of commercial facades to their original charm and utility is one of the most effective and inexpensive ways to revitalize the look and feel of a business neighborhood. Often merely covered over and hidden behind cheap superstructures, the original elements and structural integrity of many buildings remain waiting to be uncovered and rediscovered. This should be an outstanding, beneficial lecture series for ongoing urban renewal in Tacoma.

For some wonderful examples of on-going facade restoration one need only come to South Tacoma Way.

We have two recently completed projects and another at 54th and STW.
