FC Tacoma 253: A New Soccer Team for Tacoma

We don't often write about sports, but this news caught our attention: Tacoma is getting a new men's outdoor soccer team. Today the National Premier Soccer League is expected to announce the new FC Tacoma 253.

FC Tacoma 253 will begin playing in the upcoming season, using the field at Mount Tahoma High School as their home turf. The team will hold its first open tryouts tomorrow from 2 to 4 p.m. at Truman Middle School. The team will play in the Northwest Conference against teams including Gorge FC of Hood River, Oregon; Inter United FC of Tukwila; Spartans Futbol Club of Vancouver, Washington, and Seattle Sporting FC.

You soccer fans will understand all the club dynamics better than we do.

From what we understand, FC Tacoma formed earlier this year, bringing together existing local clubs, and fielding youth and women's teams, and now this men's team. There's an Italian influence, and hints at potential big money investment, and the possibility of a soccer stadium in Tacoma.

They've got a pretty nice looking crest, and fans can buy FC Tacoma shirts and scarves. Now, where do we build the stadium?

Tear down the Tacoma Dome and put a soccer stadium there. Would be cool to have a downtown stadium people actually valued, and it might create pressure to fix the bad air quality in that part of town...

That will force them the push out the sawmills and trainyards adjacent to downtown. Industry is Good (Port, and Shipping) but Dirty industries have no business being in prime waterfront in which Tacoma could grow. Tacoma Dome is just a big Ugly mess.
