Federal Funds Approved for Tacoma
A press release sent out by Senator Patty Murray’s office this morning announced a decent list of federal funds heading toward Tacoma. The money was part of the Fiscal Year 2010 Senate Transportation, Housing, and Urban Development (THUD) Appropriations bill that passed the Senate today. Two items of particular interest:
Tacoma Intermodal Transit Center, Tacoma: $1,000,000
This funding will provide for the acquisition of property for the construction of an Intermodal Transit Center in Tacoma, WA. In addition to creating over 200 jobs during the construction phase, this project will help to reduce congestion in downtown Tacoma and spur economic expansion and job growth in the long-term.
“This funding helps reduce the congestion in Pierce County that hurts our commuters and hurts our economy,” said Senator Patty Murray. “It will create jobs in the region immediately, and it will lay down a strong foundation for long-term economic growth in Pierce County.”
“This public infrastructure project will help to mitigate traffic congestion in the downtown core and will act as a catalyst to attract greater private investment in a more sustainable manner,” said City Manager Eric Anderson.
Topia – Mobile Object Infrastructure Technology, Tacoma: $2,000,000
This funding will allow Topia Technology to continue their partnership with the System Wide Information Management (SWIM) Program, which develops streamlined data management for the Federal Aviation Administration.
The completion of this project will enhance the safety, security and efficiency of the FAA’s information system management, resulting in improved safety across the board for air travelers and cargo.

I just tried to find where this intermodal project is. No info, not even on the City of Tacoma website. FYI, it was an Adam Smith earmark.
Best guess, either part of the Amtrak relocation to the Freighthouse area or one of Anderson’s South Downtown parking garages.

Money for alternatives analysis for streetcars would be the best way to use this money. That’s the key to federal matching funds for transportation.
Alas, I haven’t heard a peep about what it’s actually for.
This is kind of strange. I keep up on stuff like this…

Why in the world are Federal tax dollars being used for projects like this? This pork is complete nonsense because the most powerful senators get the most money. Has anyone compared the amount of money allocated to other cities of comparable size to Tacoma?
If these projects are so important, decrease our federal tax burden and let us pay for them locally!
This country is turning upside down.

Yes, Kooper, I believe federal dollars allocated for local area transit projects is indeed the first sign of the impending national apocalypse. I’ll be curious to see if this “Intermodal Transit Center” includes stables. Y’know, for the Four Horsemen.
