Firehouse Coffee Opens Its Doors - Neighbors Win

After many months watching the building rise from the street corner where Poole’s Nursery use to sit, the Firehouse Coffee Co. will open its doors on Tuesday.  We made it to the little pre-opening party tonight.  It’s a nice space that is much larger than we had expected.  Tonight was a bit chaotic.  We look forward to trying their coffee once the grand opening celebrations have ended and normal business begins.

While the company seems to have a good story behind it – family coffee farms back in El Salvador, organic fair trade coffee, and a thick dose of firefighter lore – the story we really like is the one about the neighborhood rallying to keep Albertsons out and bring small businesses in.  From what we hear the Central Neighborhood Council meetings were quite heated as the developers and neighbors each tried to present their sides.  Toward the end, as the pro-Albertsons side began losing traction both sides resorted to yelling…  at least according to one account of the meeting.  Neighbors rally.  Neighbors win.

According to the News Tribune story there’s a Tacoma based roasting facility coming soon.  Now that’ll be fun to see some day.
