Former Graffiti Garages to Get "Free Form" Art

Early last year, the three garages on Broadway were painted to cover up many years of graffiti art – art that some in the community considered rather important. So, it’s fascinating now to see this letter sent by the City to business owners on Broadway.

This note is a courtesy to inform you that the owner of the parking garages at 717-737 Broadway has authorized rotating free-form painting on the interior walls of the three facilities.

Since this painting is authorized by the owner, it is not ‘graffiti’ as defined in Tacoma Municipal Code …

Free-form painting? We’re curious to see how this works out.

Good to see the city change their mind, too bad the old art was covered up to begin with. I’ve said it before, William Riley for Mayor. We need more people like Riley advocating for downtown.

    Awesome!

Looks like it’s time to go buy some Krylon and dust off the “BOm Tek” moniker again…

    WHAT?

Sometimes it’s better to keep things away from the public eye until the art comes to fruition….

Sometimes it’s better to leave some things to come to fruition before leaking the “news.”

Who gets to paint? Anyone? Or will they have to be “authorized” by the city?

I’m not so sure about this idea.

The risk of being arrested or shot at is gone, so me and my crew are just gonna go somewhere different like Market Street.

yes, Bill Riley for Mayor or King of Broadway. And I’m not just saying this because he’s my landlord. He understands creativity Can blend very nicely with capitalism…and those of us on Antique Row have been doing fine with Mr. Riley as The Grandfather of Fun!…if we could just get the city of Tacoma to see us Creatives are the People to Mollycoddle, instead of Hating on Us…well, Tacoma could become The Sound Destination….
(steal all you want from my posts/blog…everyone does, I’m talking to you Peter…)

When does this take effect? I got like a dozen cans of Krylon and some new tips just waiting to be cracked open.
