Fortune Top Companies - No Tacoma in 2009

Fortune Magazine has come out with their list of the top 100 companies to work for and, unfortunately, Tacoma no longer is represented. It’s not like we’ve had much coverage on the list, but Russell Investments was always a good contender. #30 in 2007. #65 in 2008. Not to be seen in 2009. With that said, the closest top 100 company is REI.

Now, the Fortune rankings are a pay-to-play situation. Maybe Russell decided not to play. Maybe?

Did they pay to be on the Fortune 500?

Take a looksee at Feed Tacoma’s site. They are saying that the rumor mill has Russell staying in Tacoma… but it gets better… much better… that thier parent company Northwestern Mutual will be moving here too!

Here’s to hoping rumors are true!

    Cheers!

    ORLY?

Northwestern Mutual will be moving here too!

Northwestern Mutual has more than 5000 employees in Milwaukee. While a few people might be seen in Tacoma, I’d be skeptical of any more than that should they even stay.

    Do the math.

Milwaukee’s population + inconvenience of relocating a large company cross country + incentives Milwaukee will pay to keep NW mutual + cost and time to build new HQ + cost of relocating 5000 workers – Tacoma’s population – financial meltdown – deepening depression recession = Tacoma would have to offer like no taxes and free land to get them to relocate.

Remember folks… Milwaukee is bigger than Seattle and closely tied to the Chicago metroplex… there are way more people and way more money there than there is in here in Western WA.

The way I see it, Tacoma would have to offer the deal of a lifetime or Milwaukee would have to be somehow making their life hell.
Sure, consolidating NW Mutual and Russell may make sense, but I’m more inclined to think they would drop the Russell name and maybe ship several hundred employees out there. Not the whole shebang.

hey! my company (CH2M HILL) is number 86 on the list and we just opened an office in Tacoma in Oct 2007. We don’t employ many yet, only 18, but we’re working hard to grow here in T-town.

    Wait wait wait.

Something interesting I just noticed. A visual similarity between Tacoma and Milwaukee…

brb, gotta go to Dock Street and take a photo to prove my point.

Well, just was lettiing you know what Feed Tacoma said… it’s just a rumor right now but imagine if it were true? How exciting!
I am with ya though, I seriously doubt the whole kit-n-kaboodle would come to t-town.

I don’t think the “rumor” implies that NWMutual is full-on moving here so much as establishing an office here.

The comparison I had in mind did not work out as planned.

You see, the MOG cone is way too tall to see the SR 509 bridge from Dock Street.

What had caught my attention was this picture of Miwaukee’s Intermodal Station:

It would be remarkably similar to the MOG if that cone wasn’t so tall.
