Foss Waterway Development Authority Hires Goats for Clean-Up Work

Here's one of our favorite press releases we've seen in a while:

The Foss Waterway Development Authority will be hiring Rent-A-Ruminant, LLC to bring a herd of approximately 60 goats to perform vegetation management services on several sites along Dock Street.

The herd is expected to be in the area for approximately three days beginning on September 23, 2013 and ending mid-afternoon on September 26, 2013.

The herd will be working on the following sites:

  • Muni-Dock – 1025 Dock Street (west side of lot only)
  • Site 8 – 1123 Dock Street (behind building, along waterside)
  • Central Park – 1147 Dock Street (entire vacant lot)

The public is welcome to come and observe the herd while it does its work; however, we ask that everyone keep these things in mind when visiting the herd:

THERE WILL BE ELECTRIFIED FENCING ON/AROUND THE WORK AREAS.

(Warning signs will be posted.)

ALL INDIVIDUALS MUST REMAIN OUTSIDE OF THE GOAT ENCLOSURE

DO NOT FEED THE GOATS

A GOAT HERDER WILL BE ON THE PREMISES 24 HOURS A DAY

POLICE AND SECURITY PATROLS WILL BE MONITORING THE AREA

If this goes well, maybe we'll start seeing other animals helping with maintenance around town... Llamas weeding in Wapato? Snails cleaning the sides of the Municipal Building?

While we ruminate on that, who wants to go down to see the goats do their thing?

UPDATED: Apparently event goats don't like working in the rain. Due to forecasted rain, and possibly thunderstorms, the goats won't be showing up for work until mid-morning Wednesday, September 25, and are scheduled to depart mid-afternoon, Friday, September 27.

These days it's hard to find a reliable chain gang.
