Ft. Steilacoom Cyclocross - Follow Up

We received several questions about our cyclocross post the other day. Most of them were inquisitive inquiries as to what these athletes are actually doing at Fort Steilacoom.

Cyclocross is a form of bicycle racing. Picture, if you will, a relatively short race course of 1 to 2 miles over asphalt, trails, grass, dirt, and mud. Now, instead of mountain bikes, imagine cyclists using drop bar style road bikes. They aren’t exactly road bikes, but they look like it from a distance. Finally, imagine sections so steep that the cyclists have to run up the hills with their bikes on their backs. And, just to make it even more fun, the race organizers will put barriers up on the course to force riders to dismount. The season starts in September and goes through January … perfect weather in the Northwest, Northeast, and Northern Europe where this sport is big.

Sunday’s race at Fort Steilacoom was tremendous fun to watch. Some of the world’s elite were racing. Todd Wells from the US Olympic Team, Tim Johnson, the current national champion, and an intimidating stable of Kona riders made for a great final race. The women’s classes were equally as solid. If you like your cycling, we definitely recommend getting outside and checking it out sometime.

The next race at Fort Steilacoom is October 26th.
