Get Your Own Tree

We've talked about trees quite a bit recently. There was the Diversitree project, which will plant trees in Hilltop. There was the apparent neighborhood feud over fruit trees that escalated to include the City.

Now, you can get a coupon to plant your own tree. The City is offering a program designed to increase Tacoma's canopy coverage, reduce stormwater runoff and beautify neighborhoods through community building planting projects.

For a limited time only, coupons for discounts on trees purchased from select local nurseries are available to Tacoma residents for planting on their private property or in the planting strip/areas abutting their property.

Coupons are limited to one per household and are good from September 2013 to April 2014.

If you're interested in supporting the City's goal of 30% tree canopy coverage for Tacoma by 2030, or if you just like a good argument, think about planting a tree, and visit the City's "Tree Street NW" page to get your coupon for a discount.

The City page also has a long list of resources to help property owners choose the right tree and help it thrive. We hear fall is an excellent time to plant...

What a great idea! I used to conduct a tree plant for youth through the Boy Scouts when I lived in Portland. We'd plant hundreds of trees in one day with our army of youth and volunteers helping. Maybe the city can partner with a group like this and get trees planted en mass without paying for city staff to do it.

You can also pick up the coupons directly from the participating nurseries (GardenSphere, Portland Ave. & Vassey). I'm rather partial to that North end one myself.
