Grand Cinema Vandalized
We love the Grand Cinema, so we were sad to read that the theater was the victim of vandalism last night.
The good news for the day is that as the Grand continues to work towards raising funds for its conversion to digital this year, a generous donor has offered to match donations to the fund through February.

Our Valentine’s Day started off horribly as late last night our front windows were smashed! (note, we WILL be open regular hours today)

I suppose that if they’d been wiser with their money, replacing the windows wouldn’t be an issue. I seem to remember some brainiac saying that they weren’t doing either themselves or the community a service by keeping their prices down.

I’ve had problems with nearby neighborhood punks and thug vandal kids breaking or trying to break the windows of my home.
Several years ago when I was sleeping a big rock was thrown through one of my windows coming within inches of my head which could possibly have killed me if it had struck me.
Even so it was a costly event near Christmas and cancelled my Christmas as well.
There are several things that can be done.
To protect your home install window shutters or on the cheap side at least outside shades (not close to your windows though about a foot or two away so that the shade will absorb most of the kinetic energy of the thrown rock).
Adding window shutters will reduce your chances of being burgled as well whereas a window shade might hide a burglar.
Next remove all fist sized rocks or any rocks that you deem could be used to break windows from your yard and preferably from the neighborhood.
Get your neighbors involved as well in removing large potential glass breaking rocks from their yards.
If you have an alley especially one that’s unpaved removing large rocks will be cumbersome however after much diligence and daily removal it can be accomplished over the years.I personally have an alley next to my yard but it is now paved.Even so I had to remove rocks from the sides of the alley over the years.
Install security lighting and even a HD video surveillance system with perhaps night vision capabilities.
You will want to get fruit tree netting to protect outdoor motion detecting flood lights and cameras.
Not as bad idea to place some fake surveillance cameras up as well as these cost only around $10 or so.
Surprisingly that fruit tree netting is also effective in protecting windows as well as it’s really strong and most thrown rocks will bounce off of it.The netting will also be a secondary protection for your window shutters or outside blinds that protect your windows.
One can set up poles around your yard with fruit tree netting or strung between trees or shrubs.It’s really not that noticeable and easily replaceable at low cost. Thick Shrubbery like Thuja placed in front of shuttered windows also helps protect the shutters as well.My approach was to place shutters on the windows of my house,then Thuja in front of the shutters then fruit tree netting strung between the Thuja shrubs.
The Grand Cinema should get window shutters at the very least.No sense in continually replacing windows which will be costly as this vandal event will likely be tried again by either the same punk vandal or other mentally deranged punks.

Some of your ideas cannot be used for The Grand. This landmark has never looked like a fortress and frankly, will not draw people in by barricading the windows and spreading netting. Possibly the glass could be replaced with tougher glass instead of what was there. but that is expensive.

You could replace the glass with Plexiglass although it is more expensive it would be very resistant against rock breakage.
