Groundbreaking in University Place Town Center
Looking just beyond Tacoma to our neighbors, the University Place Town Center project may be seeing some progress.
According to a TNT article over the weekend, the mixed-use project by Tacoma-based developer and builder SEB Inc will be breaking ground this Friday, June 22. Last we heard, the development above the city-owned parking garage was planned to include 100 apartments and accompanying amenities, and 12,000 square feet of retail space.
The Town Center project has had a less than smooth ride since it was first conceived way back … forever ago as a mixed-use, public-private, walkable downtown development for UP. It will be good for the UP library to have some company.
Read a little more from the TNT.

This is just great! The University Place Town Project Town Center name is too long, but we will eventually get used to it, and probably just refer to it as the UPTPC. In the future it will common to hear, “Hey Jim, are you finished shooting off your mouth yet, nevermind forget it!” and then some reference to the UPTPC that Jim doesn’t even hear.

I thought that is was called the “Towneee Centree”. Aren’t they putting the stylish ‘e’ at the end to make it look like an old-fashioned village? There will be a haberdashery and an ice cream shoppe and stuff like that.
Poor UP wants to be an old style city or town with a real downtown like Tacoma or Steilacoom, but a city (or town) can’t go back in time and create their center before the widespread use of the auto.

I believe it’s “Ye Olde Towne Centre.” Besides, don’t we have their clock tower anyway – are they going to be wanting that back?
But seriously, it’s easy to make fun – I wish them the best of luck in creating an active public space

This is fantastic news for University Place (and note: they dropped the ‘e’ years ago, missing out on Dave Barry’s excellent idea for an ‘e’ tax on developments containing an unnecessary ‘e’).
That said, I am already enjoying taking weekend walks up to the Frog & Kiwi to get my morning cup of coffee and stroll through the library. I can’t wait to see what else this new development brings!
