GTCF Brings Archbishop Desmond Tutu to Tacoma

This story is a few days old, but definitely worth a mention ….

The Greater Tacoma Community Foundation recently announced a partnership with Pacific Lutheran University and University of Puget Sound in an effort to reduce youth violence in Pierce County. The partnership will culminate in a visit from Archbishop Desmond Tutu on Friday, May 13, 2011

“It is gratifying to be involved in this community-wide effort that Tacoma and Pierce County have embarked upon,” said Archbishop Tutu. “Bringing people together is what I call ‘ubuntu’ which means ‘I am because we are.’ Far too often people think of themselves as just individuals, separated from one another, whereas you are connected and what you do affects the whole world. When you do well, it spreads out; it is for the whole of humanity.”

We are all painfully aware of the issues of violence in recent Pierce County history and the Foundation hopes that a focus on leadership and building community will go a long way in reversing the trends.

Archbishop Tutu is a really cool guy. I met him at a Chicago Bulls game in 2003.

too bad the solution to reducing youth violence is not a religious one. what can you expect simpler minds to do when they see the leadership of this country just go around and hop onto other countries suede couches with their muddy platform shoes. tutu is wasting valuable time in thecoma. washington dc is where the real trouble makers are. focus on and fix dc and everything else will follow in suite.

inacomaintacoma, if the solution to reducing youth violence is religion, then why should anyone listen to this archbishop of liberalism?

What exactly is his unchanging point of reference for final authority?

Until he defines his relevance in those terms, he’s just promoting confusion and conflict.

Any garden variety apostate cloaked in stylized Catholic vestments will preach all day about the brotherhood of man.

Besides, Karl Marx already cornered the market on social gospel.

Violence is excitement. Violence is emotion. Violence is money. Violence sells movie tickets and all forms of live entertainment.

Ubuntu? Tutu. You say “I am because we are.” Don’t give me that Brother, Brother, Brother.

Ubuntu… good if you like Gnome. I stick with Kubuntu. I like KDE much better.
