Happy 3rd of July!

In case you’ve been living under a rock the past few months and have missed all of the hulabaloo, here’s your final warning: Tall Ships 2008 starts today!

The parade of sail will begin at 10am with the ships sailing from Vashon/Maury Islands to the Thea Foss where they will be docked. For more info about the Tall Ships festival visit www.tallshipstacoma.com.

At 11:00 am today, the Chinese Reconciliation Park will open for a sneak preview. The gates will close again at 5:00 pm. Check it out and see the progress. More information here.

Tonight is also the kick off party for Shore Leave. Tollefson Plaza will be the stage for a fire troupe, chalk artists and live music. This is only the first event in a busy weekend, for more details see previously on Exit133.

If you are a fan of fireworks, tomorrow will see Ruston Way hosting Freedom Fair and a spectacular fireworks display. Click here for more details.

Whew. Whatever you are doing this long weekend, have fun and be safe.

So, what are you doing?

p.s. The clouds should clear at any moment … we hope.

Tall Ships was a tremendous disappointment. The festival needs to be more clear on when the ships are leaving dock for a sailing. I went with my wife and two sons early on the 4th (10:30am), expecting to be able to visit the ships. Unbenounced to us they main ships promptly set-sail at 11am. There were not any clear signs on when the ships set-sail or would even return. When finally finding someone who knew something (blue shirts everywhere, but no one had the answer), they said they would come back after about 1.5- 2 hours. AMAZING! WE just paid $20 to see little tiny sail boats….I usually don’t complain, but this was ridiculous. You have to figure that people would come early on the 4th to see the boats, then head to Ruston in the afternoon for the Freedom Fair.

I was very disappointed and if they come back to Tacoma would not go back.

I would agreer that the ships schedules should be posted. Having been in Tacoma the last time they were here, and seeing that you could book a cruise on several of them, I knew they would not be in dock the entire time they were here. I actually wanted a schedule of when they would be out having their gun battles so I could take the kids to the water front to watch.

All in All, this is an outstanding event. I’m already looking forward to 2011 when they come back. Do you think Anthony’s takes reservations that far in advance?
