Heidelberg Hotel Plus One
The News Tribune is reporting that Hotel Concepts Inc., the folks behind the Holiday Inn Express on the former Heidelberg Brewery site, are now looking to add a Candlewood Suites to the mix. The second building would be on the same site and would target a longer-stay customer. The two hotels would be built simultaneously, with the goal of combining construction costs to save money.
Of course, there’s still a bit of design review before the project will move forward. They hope to break ground in 2009.

Just add an Old Country Buffet to the project and we’ll be in business.

I think this is probably a good sign. The fact that they are ADDING instead of subtracting(which seems to be the trend in downtown projects right now)to their initial plans would seem to indicate they are serious about building in downtown and do have the money to do so. Any decent looking and functional building that adds more life to downtown is a step in the right direction.

Too true, Squid. Too true.

I think Squid has an idea that really will work for Tacoma.

Who is going to be staying in all these hotel rooms? I hope that all works out and that incoming businesses find success here. But, I wonder if there is a need for all these rooms when current occupancy rates are hanging around 65-70%

Sometimes I ride my bicycle past the front of the Heidelberg building, and in the early evening that street feels like a stretch of “No Man’s Land;” it’s completely void and it offers a spooky possiblity of a surprise attack from a sniper or a careening jeep of commando’s.

Mofo: in the gloaming, much of downtown Tacoma feels like that, not just in front of the Heidelberg.
Still, you don’t really need to worry, all the careening jeeps are out on 5 Mile Drive.

No joke about about the 5MD. And what’s worse than dodging careening jeeps is dodging flaming arrows from wild Indians.

You meant First People, I’m sure.

No, the First People are a whole different danger out there. They swing from tree to tree on vines and pelt bikers with pine cones.
