High End Italian Dining Moving Into Stadium?
So the next logical question for many of you may be, who’s moving into El Guadelajara’s location on Tacoma Avenue. A little bird just flew by our window and told us that John Xitco of Asado and Masa fame is rumored to be considering a high end Italian restaurant in the space. The Stadium District could use a few more restaurants.
Maybe. Maybe not. We’ll see.

Damn! We could use a decent mid range Italian place- not high end…

High end. Mid range. It’s all relative. And the details probably aren’t solidified. So we can probably hold off on the swearing until a menu is posted in the window.

No joke, Morgan. I’m glad to see new places opening, but Tacoma needs more mid-range places. Since moving here a few months ago, I’ve been surprised to see that restaurant food, whether it’s at a bar or somewhere fancier, seems more expensive here. Is it a lack of competition or what?

...more expensive than Seattle, I meant say.

It IS more expensive here and it may be due to pent-up demand and lack of competition.
I still haven’t found a Thai place I love as much as the 7 or so in Fremont alone. And it seems like restaurants in Tacoma charge more for their appetizers than Seattle places charge for entrees sometimes!

What this city needs is a decent pirate food joint. What is more, we don’t even have a place that serves decent prospector food either. We are all living in the tragic kingdom.

Funny too how many seem to think they serve the neighborhood. That’s a mighty BIG neighborhood if everyone thinks they’re too expensive.

When is someone going to be original and open a nice MEDIUM range Mediterranean restaurant. God forbid we be original around here…
D Daniel November 29, 2006
Hear hear, Kris! Mediterranean or Middle Eastern would be great. I hear there’s a decent Mediterranean restaurant in Federal Way, but it seems a shame to have to drive to a strip mall in Federal Way to get some good mediterranean or middle eastern cuisine.
And I do hope that “high end” Italian becomes more mid-range and that it’s got a menu that distinguishes it from other Italian places in town. I’ve been hoping ever since I moved to the Stadium District that more restaurants would move in. Now that they are moving in, it turns out that I can’t afford to eat at them more than a couple of times a year.

Being in the restaurant business and having lived in Tacoma all my life, I do understand that many Tacomans scare easily when it comes to their food. One of my favorite places to go is Gateway to India and they are very reasonable. So, maybe we are ready for some REAL ethnic diversity in our restaurants. YES, I agree Daniel! Middle Eastern, maybe even Moroccan and Pakistani too!

Ethiopian!

I’ll second the Ethiopian. Currently, where’s the closest place for some Ethiopian food?
D Daniel November 29, 2006
DavidS, I think Queen Sheba in Seattle is the closest Ethiopian. It’s delicious, in any event.

All this wonderful restaurant talk on a cold afternoon is making me hungry – I’m outta here and hitting the road! Thoughts: Bella Nina’s affordable, or maybe that’s not quite what people are talking about(?). And David, maybe I was dreaming it, but I think I was told that one of the Ethiopian restaurateurs was thinking of opening a Tacoma location. Perhaps one of my lurking friends can tell me if I’m really remembering that conversation correctly, or if I must now be shot (or given a dose of polonium, which in its own way would be personally ironic). Morgan, I truly don’t know how it compares, but I enjoy the aptly named Thai Restaurant in Fife (4420 Pac Hwy). Until Fife gets their Post Office, you can just say it’s in the 98424 part of Tacoma.
