Hilltop Development Update

New mixed-use development on MLK is moving forward; Tacoma Housing Authority plans to build a new development at the corner of MLK and Earnest S Brazill, next door to a pair of historic buildings that developer Kevin Grossman plans to restore.

Yesterday Tacoma architecture firm BLRB posted a few details of the new THA project in the HIlltop to their Facebook page.

BLRB is proud to be working with Tacoma Housing Authority on this Catalys[t] project on the Martin Luther King Corridor in Tacoma, WA. here are some stats:

49,600 GSF – 120’x100’ Corner lot Mixed Use infill MLK and Brazill

48 units affordable housing (32 one bedroom, 14 two bedroom, 2 live work units)

20 parking stalls

2,900 GSF Retail

Six floors total (5 over one concrete base podium)

Nice gesture to historic Kellogg Sicker and Pochert Bldg. directly north of the site.

BLRB also planning the renewal of Valhalla Hall 250 feet south of this parcel.

The image posted by BLRB shows the undeveloped Kellogg-Sicker and Pochert buildings next door, but last we heard developer Kevin Grossman was still moving forward on his plans to rehabilitate the currently vacant historic buildings. Whereas the residential portion of the THA development will be affordable housing, the residential units in the smaller historic building will be market-rate.

As for that Valhalla Hall project, last month BLRB posted an image and a few details of those plans.

BLRB is excited to move ahead with the City of Tacoma on this Hilltop Catalyst building revival! The 108 year-old former Swedish-American Social Hall is slated for (+/-) 24 affordable housing units and live/work artist lofts, as well as street level retail along MLK. Looking forward to being a part of Hilltop’s resurgence!

That makes for quite a few more residential units in the heart of the hilltop, as well as several updated retail spaces. Together these plans build on the new healthcare center, and continue changing the face of the MLK corridor. Are you ready for some change?

How exciting! All this development, plus the real possibility that the Tacoma Link will go through here soon. This is a neighborhood on the move.

What kind of goofball gives a thumbs down to an innocuous and cheerful neighborhood-boostery comment like Arash's? Is there a "down with Hilltop" contingent out there that I should know about?
