Hilltop Kitchen is Closing

Bad news for lovers of craft cocktails and fresh, seasonal food in the heart of the Hilltop: Hilltop Kitchen is closing.

After a run of two and a half years, owners Chris Keil and Matt Schweitzer will close the doors due to a failure to reach a lease agreement with their landlord. Hilltop Kitchen initially opened in the summer of 2013, after Keil left the nearby 1022 South.

The good news is that Keil and Schweitzer plan to bring HK back in some incarnation. According to The News Tribune, they are in lease negotiations on a new space for the craft cocktail bar. No word yet where that will be. Their other project, Marrow, will continue to operate on 6th Ave, right where it is.

As for the space currently home to HK, property owner Denise Tempest (of the Tempest Lounge previously located in the space) is looking for new tenants.

Your last day for a cocktail from Hilltop Kitchen in its current incarnation is December 19. Anyone else feeling thirsty?

Who knows, it could be good news in the long run if HK creates a good new space on the Hilltop and somebody else uses the old HK/Tempest space for something cool. Sorry though to hear that the owner/landlord (who hardly seems like someone who would seek to gouge a tenant) and HK couldn't agree on terms to keep it going.

Praying HK carries forward & the change doesn't last too long as they open a new location! We'll support you wherever you may go, HK! Cheers
