Historian to discuss ‘Bridges of Tacoma’

A number of you really enjoyed the Tacoma Historical Society’s History of Sixth Avenue presentation a few months back.  Now, the THS is back with a a discussion on bridges.  Dude, I like bridges.  It sounds good to me.  Check it out!

Dr. Ronald E. Magden, historian, educator and author, will discuss “The Bridges of Tacoma” when the Tacoma Historical Society meets at 7 p.m. Monday, March 12, at Tacoma Public Library.

The meeting is free and open to the public.

Dr. Magden commented: “It is possible to follow Tacoma’s history through its bridges. Tacoma’s 11th Street Bridge was the workers’ route to jobs on the waterfront for a century. The Narrows Bridge proved to be the escape route to suburbia.
Whence the new Narrows Bridge?

”Follow the history through a short videotape composed of a 1915 Ford Motor Company film of the 11th Street Bridge. Another section is WSDOT video footage of the actual sound of the roar of “Galloping Gertie” collapsing in 1940.”

He asked, “Will the new Narrows Bridge become more important than the 11th Street Bridge or the old Narrow Bridges? Could it someday rival the Pont Neuf in Paris? The Rialto in Venice? The Chain Bridge connecting Buda and Pest?”
