Historic Spaces Lecture - Tonight!

Ack! How did it become Thursday already? Apologies for the late notice, but we left our brains on vacation.

Historic Tacoma is hosting a lecture and discussion to kick off its Preserving Tacoma’s Historic Sacred Places project. The lecture will review the architecture and history of Tacoma’s sacred places, their contributions to the development of the City and its neighborhoods, and take a look to the future.

The evening’s event will feature architectural historian, Caroline Swope, architect Gerry Eysaman, and Pastor Dennis Andersen, Board member, Partners for Sacred Places.

It sounds interesting, and we do love our history …

Did anybody end up going to this? If so how was it?

It was great (but then I helped organize it). Gerry Eysaman spoke on Tacoma’s early ethnic communities, the development of the congregations spawned by those groups, and their contributions to the development of the city. Caroline Swope spoke on predominant religious architectural styles here in Tacoma (Gothic e.g. 6th Ave Baptist; modernist e.g. Temple Beth El; vernacular e.g. Center for Spiritual Living on the North Slope). Dennis Andersen spoke on the future of these structures and offered some advice to congregations. There were a number of congregations represented at the sessino and there was lively conversation. Tad Monroe, Urban Grace, spoke of what they’re doing to connect with community and stimulate use of their facility — because of their proximity to the theatre district, they’re working heavily with the arts community. Historic Tacoma will continue to facilitate this conversation with Tacoma congregations and community partners. We’re hosting an open house/tour of close to 15-20 sacred places on Oct.25, 1-5pm.
