Historic Tacoma

What: Organizational meeting for Historic Tacoma, dedicated to the preservation of Tacoma’s architectural heritage

When: Thursday, July 20th, 5:30-7:30pm

Where: Olympic Room, Tacoma Public Library, 1102 Tacoma Av. South

Why: Tacoma retains many stunning buildings, fine examples of vernacular architecture, and historic neighborhoods which reflect the city’s unique character and cultural heritage. The preservation of these structures adds to the city’s vitality and their rehabilitation has served as an economic development catalyst over the past twenty years. As property values escalate and Tacoma continues to grow, we risk losing significant structures. By proactively advocating for, educating about, and preserving historic structures, Historic Tacoma can support the rehabilitation of deteriorated buildings and the adaptive re-use of structures which no longer meet current needs.

Join us in a public meeting to discuss the state of preservation in Tacoma and how we might sustain an effort to preserve the city’s architectural heritage. We need your participation to identify community needs, successful methods to address these needs, gauge the level of support, and identify potential board members, volunteers, members, and projects.

This is real life, not SimCity.

Yes. Very true. But having played SimCity, it might be a great teaching tool for both the Council and City Staff to play as well.
Imagine crafting a Tacoma City model using SimCity code – in very specific terms – to explore the net effect of such actions asthis proposal. The DoD uses very detailed simulation tools to wargane outcomes and methods – why not a city in trouble?
