Hostess Bakery Building Set for Demolition?

Tacoma Untapped unearthed the the application to rezone and demo the former Hostess Bakery at 701 Sprague into a new mixed use building. The plan would rezone the property from R4 multifamily to C2 commercial. Then, following demolition of the circa 1950 building, a new 2 story mixed-use retail and office project would be built complete with 47 surface parking spaces. We know how much y’all love surface parking …

Just in case you don’t remember all the details – the Interstate Bakeries Corporation went bankrupt in 2004 resulting in many of its buildings going quiet. This building came up for auction in 2007 – subject to the rules of the bankruptcy court – and was purchased for $850k in December of that year.

Jump through to TacomaUntapped for some images and the complete application.

A public hearing on the rezone will be held on May 29, 2009.

Further evidence that the city needs to get rid of suburban style off street parking minimums city-wide.

    Morgan,

Thanks for the picture. One of my aunts was Hazel Matthaei. I think most of the family are now gone. They also founded Roman Meal on S. Tacoma Way. Hazel’s Father sold their bakery to Continental, I think. The family lost everything in the great depression. I remember Hazel’s Mother had the most beautiful Christmas trees with all the wires hidden so you couldn’t see them!

I saw that stucco too … ick! What’s wrong with brick?

New development would be nice there and all, but I’m pretty sad to hear that building will go. The new development seems to be similarly sized, why can’t they renovate what’s already there and has history and character? Is someone going to ask that question and demand a response or do we just accept the developers’ plans and move on?
