How a Region Can Engender a Culture of Entrepreneurship

Several times in the last few years we’ve had discussions about entrepreneurism in Tacoma and the South Sound. Now we have an opportunity to hear another perspective on the issue. This just in from our friends at UWT:

How a Region Can Engender a Culture of Entrepreneurship
with Jon Goodman at UW Tacoma

Jon Goodman, president of Town Hall Los Angeles and a popular speaker on economic development and entrepreneurship will discuss how Tacoma can create a “culture of entrepreneurship” at a breakfast meeting for community leaders at UW Tacoma. Founded in 1937, Town Hall Los Angeles is dedicated to promoting civic participation, pride and awareness. It is among the top 10 executive speaker forums in the nation.

Goodman designed and opened the Annenberg Incubator Project at the University of Southern California and has served as department chair and professor at USC’s Marshall School of Business. She also founded the University of Houston’s Gulf Coast Small Business Development Center.

Supporting the entrepreneurship of Tacoma citizens is more important than subsidizing upper end real estate development with tax breaks for people that don’t live here.

Doing this appropriately in these times is a difficult task, most likely though we are going to start redoing the mistakes of high density housing projects in the name of environmentalism.

Unfortunately I cannot attend, hope you have a great event.

Well yeah, offering Tacoman’s a free continental breakfast is a start. Whoops, to qualify for a free breakfast, you need to be a community leader (They might check I.D. at the door.).

Hey, maybe that Nick guy who does a twitter feed of City Council meetings for Feed.Tacoma.com can make it to this event and provide a live-feed to non-community leaders (Does this type of independant mobile reporting have potential as an upstart business?).

Anyway, this sounds like an interesting topic and if you believe media reports, the current claim is that more than 50% of employees don’t like their job.

It’s often the case that when employees leave a company involuntarily or voluntarily, the next pursuit is self-employment. The satisfaction sought is usually provided by an increase in responsibilities.
