How's Your Neighborhood Council Doing?
The City is asking for your feedback on Tacoma’s Neighborhood Council program as a part of its five-year review of the program. An anonymous online survey asks members of the public to comment on their general awareness of and engagement in the Neighborhood Council program, and for feedback on the effectiveness and importance of the Neighborhood Council program in their experience.

The purpose of the Neighborhood Council program is to improve community engagement and communication between the City and Tacoma residents. The program is designed to help citizens work together and with the City to improve their neighborhoods. The survey lists the program’s five goals.
- Fostering open communication between the City and its neighborhoods
- Providing citizens with an opportunity to participate in government decisions
- Building consensus among diverse interests
- Developing solutions to mutual problems
- Helping citizens develop a sense of personal pride and responsibility for their neighborhood
So, how’s your neighborhood council doing?

Who represents the west side not the north side of the Narrows Bridge? The west slope taxpayers pay an enormous amount of money south of 6th avenue who are left with abandoned businesses from 6th to Pearl street with vacancy signs posted everywhere for graffiti and grass to grow. Who represents the west slope taxpayers on the city council? I see transportation taxes going up but we get nothing except a modified street light with cameras proposed for 6th and Jackson. Seriously 7k a year in property taxes and increased transportation fees for one added camera? The west slopes are getting screwed.

Take a look at 38th st. in the Lincoln District and that will give you a good indication of how our council person is doing. It is a travesty what they allow property owners and business owners to get away with here. Parking on sidewalks, tearing down buildings and not picking up the rubble, sidewalks are all torn up, roundabouts are horrible, vagrants running rampant all across 38th st. Empty lots that are city owned and private are full of bushes, abandoned buildings left to rot, spray painted ones allowed to continue with blight. Asia town is a disaster and our council person allows this to happen on his/her watch. 38th st. needs to be redone from I-5 to Pacific Avenue. I give them an F.

The Central Neighborhood Council does a great job. I can go down to any meeting to hear from specific police officers dedicated to our neighborhood, fire, city liaison, as well as provide any feedback. The Central Council has made me think differently about community and Tacoma in general (in a good way), and I’ve even found myself volunteering a small amount because of the work they do. For anyone who happens to think the Sprague entranceway no longer looks like an eyesore, that was the Central Neighborhood Council.

That is great Garrett, glad you are feeling good about that part of town. I think the entranceway on 38th also needs to be improved, it is a huge gateway into our city that many people use. It looks terrible at the moment and not sure why, there is plenty to offer here, but it keeps getting overlooked.

Thanks Garrett
We are a small group but we get stuff done. The Sprague Project took us a few years to get it done but well worth it…and to think that is just phase 1 of 2 phases. Visit us at Facebook/cnctacoma.

Other than one park, I’m not sure what my neighborhood council has done for me. I can’t think of any projects I’ve heard of in recent years. But then again, I suppose that’s as much on me for not getting involved as anyone in the neighborhood.

Sid, Perhaps you should look with eyes of progress. In the last year much has been done. An abandoned, vermin infested store has been cleaned out. I was told the city has boarded up the building on 38th and Park and has abatement process well under way.
Many of the graffiti marks have been painted over, except for the brick building who refues to have it removed. Litter removal crews have been working weekly to to clean and improve area for the last 8 months.
Several new businesses have a moved into the Lincoln District and more are planning on it.
Last year the park was renovated, and there is plan for an expansion of services.
I would suggest you stop by the stores and restraunts and ask them who their council member is, because he has be working hand and hand with many turn the area around.
