Is That Legal? 72-Hour Film Festival

The Grand Cinema’s 72-hour film festival is back: the films have been wrapped and submitted, and May 11 at the Rialto, you will have a chance to witness all the genius your fellow Tacomans can cram into 72 hours. These films are always creative, occasionally zany, and undoubtedly Tacoma; we suggest you get your tickets now.

The concept is simple: each filmmaker team creates a four minute, thirty second film based on the same criteria, including several unique elements, which must be in the film. They have 72 hours to script, film, edit, and submit their work. This year’s films had to include the following:

  • An invention
  •
  • A purchase or product gone bad
  •
  • An empty chair
  •
  • The line: “Is this/that legal?”
  •
  • Film length must be no longer than 4:30 (including credits)

Teams gathered at the Grand Cinema last Thursday evening for their instructions. The films were due back at the Grand by 7:00 p.m. Sunday, April 29.

You can be the first to see the collected films at the viewing party at the Rialto on Friday, May 11. The event will include a screening of completed films, awards ceremony (including Audience Choice), and refreshments available for purchase (beer, wine, pizza, cupcakes).
