It's Official: Kandle to Get Pool
Last night the Metro Parks Board officially voted to relocate the Titlow Pool to Kandle Park. The major driving factor was the environment. Not everyone is happy … but it’s a resolution.

I agree that Titlow is no longer a suitable site for the pool, but don’t understand how a single 50 meter pool can’t serve both competitive and recreational interests.
We approved a measure to replace what we had. Do that or give the money back.

Why is Titlow not a suitable site for a swimming pool?

Environmental issues. Salmon habitat protections instituted in that area since original construction make any new construction there prohibitively expensive, permitting a huge hassle.

What an incredible crock of crap!!
I challenge even ONE salmon to be able to live in the so-called “wetlands” adjacent to Titlow. The lake there catches run-off from the streets and neighborhood surrounding it. Also, the tide is let in and out by a gate that goes under the tracks. Salmon couldn’t live there if they wanted to in 100 years.
The people have been screwed by Metro Parks…AGAIN.
Vote every one of the nefarious bastards out of office!!!!
We voted for a bond to “refurbish” Titlow Pool. NOT to move it into an overcrowded neighborhood, replace it with a spish and splash and then do God knows what to the current pool. Lets just GIVE it to the Tacoma Swim Club, they’re the only ones that can use it in the Summertime, anyway.
What a F%$#ing joke.

I’m sure the park’s department will now be relocating the fishing pier to somewhere along South Tacoma Way.

Are you listening, salmonid readers? You’ve been challenged!

According to the article, “natural process is completely out of wack”. The tide comes in and goes out via a gate that must be manually opened and closed.
In order for ANYTHING to proliferate in this pond, the gate would have to be removed at a cost of God only knows what. Who’s going to pay for it? Metro Parks? BNSF? Fat Fricking chance!
Metro needs to do as promised. Refurbish to pool at TITLOW and nowhere else. In either case, vote the bastards out of office!

Sorry J. Cote, you’re too late to the party. We are going to have a great big splashy-pool at Kandle Park with that money.

@8: Lagoon restoration could easily be funded by state and federal salmon recovery funds (if that funding isn’t already lined up). Restoration projects that benefit salmon listed under the Endangered Species Act are funded through those sources all the time and all around the Northwest and California.
