Laughing all the way to the silver screen
Sometimes the best things offend the most. Comics who go raw with their material prove that there is a fine line between being offended and being entertained.
That is the basis behind a yet-to-shoot movie project in Tacoma that is working its way up the production ladder.
Jesus for Less is a film that not only takes place in Tacoma but include mostly local cast and crew members. But it will likely offend and entertain people outside the 253.
The story line follows two 20-something slackers, who are paying their bills by working in JesusforLess, a Christian bookstore in the City of Destiny. All seems to be going well until Christ-Mart starts cutting into the customer base. Toss in a love triangle between the store clerks and their hottie coworker, and you get the idea.
“Amid protests, breasts, and baby Jesus, Jesus4Less is a dark comedy about fundamentalism, love, lust, greed, homosexuality, marijuana and, oh yeah, a midget,” film backer Aaron Flett-Riggs said. “You’re sure to be offended, wondering, and most importantly laughing.”
The movie is set to start shooting this summer, but like everything, money is an issue. Budget projections range from $4,000 to $20,000, depending on donations of props and shooting locations. That is where regular folks can help.
Jazzbones will be holding a standup comedy fundraiser to help fund the film. Proceeds from Friday’s show will go toward covering film expenses. But it should also be a fun night for itself.
“It should be a fun show and will help a part of the community that needs it,” Jazzbones booker Sean Culver said. “We need more local flicks, yo!”

Dang! Was the fundraiser @ JB this past Friday? Would’ve loved to have attended and supported the flick!
Irreverence rocks. Lord knows we need more of it.

hopefully this will be better than “the immaculate conception of little dizzle” which fell hard into the category of “cute but unfortunately not viable”. especially at a time when $4,000 to $20,000 would better go to a documentary on the homeless or the gentrification of tacoma. but then again that would take just another thing away from the tacomaphiles to drink and be merry about because reality is such a downer.
