Learn GIS at UWT
Do you want to learn more about geographic information systems? Everyone is talking about it. We know that several of you armchair urban studies folks, map geeks, and… well, a lot of you have told us you want to use GIS more. Here’s your chance to put your words into action.
UW Tacoma is offering a six month certificate program for anyone that wants to develop their GIS skills. The first class starts on January 31st. Those that finish the program will be certified in using GIS.
For the non-armchair urban studies folks; GIS is a computer-based tool for mapping and analyzing things that exist and events that happen on Earth. It has been put to use in environmental and geographic research, cartography, urban planning, business marketing, emergency response planning and more.
Classes meet Thursdays from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuition for the series of 3 classes is $2485. To apply or learn more about the program, visit the website or call (253) 692-4618.

These are great couses for people who specialize in environmental science, urban planning, and geography. I would recommend taking these courses. Having the “certificate” is a great way to jump into one of these fields with little or no experience.

I’m a current student of the program and I agree with all of the above. This is an unbelievable tool and its potential is truly limitless. I’m in the second of three quarters and am already getting the chance to apply these skills to real world scenarios. It seems that there’s no shortage of people and agencies out there desperate for people with this skill set.
GIS has the potential to strengthen any degree and is compatible with a countless number of fields. My advice (for what it’s worth)…. do it…. now.
