LeMay Grand Opening Extravaganza Plans

The new LeMay America’s Car Museum is gearing up (no pun intended) for its impending Grand Opening this June. And it won’t be just any old single-event opening. In fact, the LeMay will be throwing three separate opening night parties on June 1, followed by a two-day extravaganza of a museum opening.

June 1 festivities include three parties from three different eras: “Great Gatsby” from the roaring 20s, “Sock Hop” for fans of cars from the era of juke boxes and poodle skirts, and “Racers Start Your Engines” for NASCAR fans. The Gatsby event will be a formal, black tie, sit-down affair (would Gatsby settle for anything less?), while the other two events will be less formal buffet options, but period-themed attire is encouraged for all three.

On June 2, the museum throws its doors open with a free car show, and the (not free) first opportunity for the general public to check out the collection and the inside of the shiny new building we’ve all been watching. There will be go-kart races, and a free concert to celebrate the opening. On June 3, the free car show and go-kart rides continue. There will be opportunities to become a member on these days, and if you do decide to become a member after touring, you can apply the cost of your admission that day to the purchase of your membership (if you purchase it the same day).

Tickets for June 1 Opening Gala parties must be purchased ahead of time. Admission on June 2 and 3 must be purchased at the door the day of the Grand Opening. For more on the event, visit www.lemaymuseum.org.

Don’t forget that there is a great museum at Marymount (www.lemaymarymount.org). Cut from the same cloth, but sewn uniquely and a completely different institution. Marymount is attracting tourists from around the country already.

It would be nice if LeMay-ACM and LeMay-Marymount were in some sort of reciprocal agreement. I think they’re working on it. But it would make the whole attraction to Pierce County stronger when they do figure it out. You basically have the car capital of the United States with two of the largest museums of their type in the world.
