Livable Communities Fair May 17
The Livable Communities Fair will be held on May 17th (yes, that’s Saturday). The fair features an impressive line-up of guest speakers performing on two stages throughout the day at the Tacoma Dome Exhibition Hall.
Presenters will discuss how to save earth and that plant growing in the backyard. The range of speakers stretch from the Reptile Man to Sheriff Paul Pastor. Stop by the new Grow Local Tacoma booth, if you can find us in the over 200 booths set up with lots of give-aways, information and fun activities for the kids. And, best of all, its FREE!

Last night, during my volunteer training for The Livable Communities Fair, I realized that this was a much more fantastic event than I had previously thought it was going to be! The fun stuff they are doing just for kids is SO great! Rock climbing wall, trout fishing, animal petting zoo, skate boarding, Home Depot workshops, Reptile Guy Exhibit/demo, planting workshops . . . there’s so much to do! Everything is free except the put-put area (100% goes to charity) and food. The outdoor food vendors are very affordable (nothing over $5), so it’s a very inexpensive event.
Plus, there will be tons of free stuff given away by individual booths and the event organizers will be doing hourly drawings for everything from a bag of chips to free lazer tag coupons. It seems like a really well organized and fun-loaded event! Hope to see you there!

This was a great event. I was really surprised by the number of displays and the affordability of the food. We had an italian ice that was delicious and very welcome in the heat of Saturday. There were good sized, involved, crowds at the two stages. Everything did seem really well organized.
I don’t have children, but could tell that there was an amazing variety of activities for them. There was quite a line for the climbing wall.
I hope the organizers decide to do this event again next year! It looked like a success to me!

We would love to hear your feedback about the fair. There is an online survey at our website at www.livablepiercecounty.org
We would love for this event to continue and need your feedback in order to make that happen.

Approx. 46% of Tacoma residents are renters. The only real estate that is selling at an affordable price is Condo’s. Where are all these “Backyard” gardens going to be planted? On balconies???

Actually J. Cote, containers on balconies can produce a large array of food and flowers with minimal work. As a renter I’ve done this for years. Also, community garden plots are available for all members of the community who want a real piece of dirt.
The Livable Communities Fair was great and about so much more than gardening. Social service agencies were there, TPCHD was doing lead testing, kids got to make birdhouses at the Home Depot booth, and much much more.
Thanks to organizers for a great event. My only critique is that I wish more folks would have attended, but sunny weather is stiff competition!

What? Renters can’t have gardens in their backyards? Or are you saying all the renters are in condos? Still, some balconies are bigger than some yards and can sustain quite the garden. Even a balconette can have a great container garden with bamboo, veggies, flowers, etc.

This fair had more than gardening going on. Representatives from local universities; all kinds of organic/natural baby products and info; tons of kids activities; even stuff for the pets.
If you’ve been to the Northwest Flower and Garden Show, it was kinda like the educational area. Except that the Garden show costs $25 and the LCF was free.

too bad they exploited animals by having the petting zoo and fishing. the rest of teh fair (except for the sherriff speaking) sounds cool though.
