Luzon Ownership Comes Home
Last week Dan Voelpel mentioned that the Gintz Group signed its final papers with the now-former owner Mike Barnett of Oakland, CA. After a strong confirmation from the Gintz Group, we are starting to get excited.
That places Tacoma’s architectural jewel (not that you could tell that by just looking at it) in local hands. The Gintz Group expects that things may get under way as soon as June, not April, as previously thought, because there’s a lot of work that has to be done ahead of that date. In the next 30 days we should expect to see the development plan filed with the City of Tacoma.
This is really going to make our summer …
Since we’re talking about the Gintz Group – have we told you that the Mecca is our current favorite project? Tacoma’s last downtown adult theater should be ready for residents soon. Half of our Suite133mates are coveting a unit with that address, some even have checkbooks at the ready. The building changes week to week as the project gets closer to completion.

I took a tour of the Mecca a few weeks back. They did a great job cleaning it out – you don’t have to worry about where you step now.
One VERY interesting feature is to be found on the lower floor- there’s a view of the space underneath the sidewalk where some light trickles through (and some water too). It would be a cool spot to put in an indoor waterfall with a 2-3 story drop!

Can I have the tree growing out the side? We’re doing some landscaping and it would make an interesting discussion piece.

Doesn’t Mike Barnett still own the adjacent lots to the south, where the parking lot is now? There was discussion about a six-story building he planned to build there about a year ago. I believe that particular discussion spawned my now infamous letter about parking regulations that eventually made its way to the pages of several local newspapers and the minds of many of our elected leaders.

don’t say upside when discussing the Mecca….How many of you actually visited the Mecca….before, that is? Hmmmm? And that tree on the Luzon….that would be a Butterfly Bush…Buddleia.

No!!!! They aren’t going to replace those purple glass blocks in the sidewalks?! That’s the price of progress.
I suppose next you’ll be telling me that they aren’t getting rid of the top surface layer of the street on Broadway to reveal the beautiful brick road underneath.

I seem to recall that they were going to increase the number of glass blocks and/or increase the natural light heading down into the space.

Holy s@#t. Somebody was listening. The Mecca now seems to offer some parking options. Generally speaking, I find the discount offered on condominiums to be waaay to low relative to detached houses (especially where the latter are relatively inexpensive, as in Tacoma) but if the parking is deeded, and the pricing (nearly) sane and reflective of the market, I just might consider it. Well done, Gintz Group.
This bodes well for the Luzon.
PS- re: Voelpel’s article, I do not believe cheerleaders Doug Goodman and Bruce Mann.
