Map Your Biking Wisdom

Here's a fun, an potentially quite useful tool from The New York Times: The Times has created an interactive map of user-generated "biking wisdom."

The wisdom is very specific, so you can learn about or share information on specific intersections or streets, like that corner where all the drivers seem to be driving blind, or the pot holes that make it impossible to enjoy riding down your street... Or how enjoyable it is to ride down that well-marked bike corridor...

Find your location, read what others have to say about biking there, and contribute your wisdom. Seattle has a lot of wisdom already recorded, but as we look at the map of Tacoma right now, there is a conspicuous absence of tips.

So let's fill this in... What's your biking wisdom in Tacoma?

Delightful. I can see something like this being very useful.

Biking in Tacoma is great. You can ride on either side of the street, even when there is a designated bike lane. When you encounter a stop light you just ride onto the sidewalk and pretend you are actually a pedestrian. There's never any requirement to stop at stop signs, just continue through as if there were no sign. And don't be bothered with giving signals or observing any commonly observed rules of the road. The rules of the road are just for auto drivers. Like I said, biking in Tacoma is great!

Easy to understand why Tacoma's bike map is lacking comments. Throughout most of the city, Tacoma is filled with beautiful, wide and all but traffic-empty side streets for bikers to take advantage of. Safer than many arterials, which smart cyclists should avoid. Bike commute times are just as fast on side streets, if not faster. So unlike more crowded cities, there's little need for such a map in Tacoma.
