Maritime Fest 2009 - this Weekend

The time for Maritime Fest 2009 has arrived. Celebrating the Tacoma’s 52 miles of waterfront throughout the years, Maritime Fest is your chance to get out in the sun, onto the water and spend a day with friends and family. Where else can you ride on an Army landing craft, partake in good food, watch Dragon boat races and listen to some great live music? Our personal favorite is the Quick and Dirty Boat Building competition where…

Each team is allotted four sheets of plywood, 100 screws, six 2×4s, two tubes of caulk, and a surprise “mystery” material to be supplied on competition day. Teams will provide their own tools and may spend up to $17.04 of their own money on materials (receipts required). The craft, powered solely by their team members, will then race on a course in the Foss Waterway to determine their seaworthiness and speed.

If you look closely, you’ll even see one of your favorite Exit133 contributors (and local architect) in a rather dashing historic outfit working hard to build and race one of the boats.

Alert! DON’T go to the Maritime Fest or the Dock Street Pub this weekend – these folks are “tow-happy”. I was there just 1 1/2 hrs and it just cost me over $500 to get my car back after parking where both a volunteer and the restaurant signs said to park. So you either pay 20 bucks to park (which is outrageous!) or you get towed…regardless what the signs say or they tell you. This is a real fraud. I will never support this festival or Port Commissioner Petridge again.

Mr. Boe did NOT take a bath and he looked mighty keen in his bathing costume. A real crowd favorite!

After the photo finish the judges ruled that his ultra-stable, and mostly watertight, craft did not finish first. He put on a good show though and displayed his ox-like strength pulling those gianormous oars!

    Nice work Team Sealestial Fooles!
