Metro Parks Board is Challenged
We’ve had several emails bouncing around our inbox regarding the Revenue Task Force created by the Metro Parks Board. And, last night, the Commissioners heard an earful from the public. The goal of the Task Force was to identify potential new revenue streams for Metro Parks that didn’t involve raising taxes. The report (pdf) that was produced last November created a lot of controversy. It had some great ideas, some bad ideas and some left to be decided. A hotel in the Point Defiance triangle? Market rate prices for event facilities? Concessions in Wright Park?
The Heidelberg Park discussion is a result of this particular report.
The News Tribune did a pretty good summary of what transpired last night. We’re curious where this may go next.

I find it fascinating that citizens/grass roots people are struggling with this because I thought leaders were expected to show leadership by initiating action/change. The way I am reading it, you’d think that all change must start at the ground floor or it won’t be accepted. True, balance and a happy medium are BEST, but I don’t think everyone is in agreement with what balance and a happy medium ever looks like.

Citizen concerns are completely legit on this. The RTF didn’t study the history or public trust issues surrounding each of their targets, nor did they seek community input during their process.
The report and its acceptance by Metro Parks is an exercise in arrogant & closed government.

What bothers me the most about this, is that Metro Parks Board gave credence to what amounts to the pipe dreams of people that had no idea of the impact of what they are saying.
Now, somebody will suggest that we spend an ass load of money to research each and every aspect of this nonsensical document. More time and tax money wasted.
I’m beginning to think that the Board couldn’t pour water from a boot if the instructions were written on the heel.

They already have spent on this $48,000.00 for a Master Plan for Heidelberg (now being called 17th & Tyler Development)before the board ever accepted the Revenue Task Force suggestions; watch out Task Force suggestions coming to your neighborhood soon

This is sad! What is Metro Parks thinking!?
Why are they wasting time with ways to exploit their (our) assets? Is this the best they (we) can do?
Maybe we would be better served by dissolving Metro Parks in favor of creating a city parks department.
