Mick Newham's Carvings at Fulcrum Gallery
Living in a region so dense with beautiful trees, it’s easy to take for granted the magic, mundane material called wood. Lucky for us, we have Mick Newham’s carvings to restore a sense wonder to lumber.

The Australian-born artist’s new show debuts at the Fulcrum Gallery on Sept. 18th, with an opening from 6 to 10 p.m. Newham carves bold patterns into heavy, railroad tie-like timbers, then finishes them off with rugged metal plating and flat, vivid paint. The collection will be displayed until Oct. 12th.
Newham will also speak at the gallery on Sept. 28th from 6 to 9 p.m. There, he will describe being influenced by the ladders of the Dogon people of East Mali, who carve large notches in thick branches so they can climb onto their roofs. Perhaps he’ll be convinced to climb one of his own timbers.
