Mixed Use Center Public Hearing on Tuesday
We’ve been talking about the potential changes to our mixed-use centers for many many months now. Well, tomorrow is your opportunity to let Council and city staff know what you think. Do you have an opinion about the proposed increases in density requirements, elimination of parking in some areas, changes in design standards, or some other element of the draft recommendations? If so, let yourself be heard!

I was at the study session last week taught by Planning staff and there was an interesting question raised by a disabled advocate about parking requirements reducing access for the disabled.
I think it’s clear that the only feasible solution is to trigger a street use review with a new project as a component of transportation concurency requirements under the GMA.
Bike path issues are also of a similiar nature in that regard, and we do need to make sure that bike planning is a component of mixed use center redevelopment.
There is however one glaring omission from this plan – recognizing the authority of each mixed use business center to organize and determine its own future through tools like design review. As such I fear this regulatory effort is just another license for the control freaks to wreak havoc.
A good example of this is in the Dome District – where regional transportation impacts are hurting local businesses.
