MLK Neighborhood Development Community Meeting

The City will hold its next community meeting on the Subarea Plan and Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) being developed for the South Downtown area. The Martin Luther King Jr. neighborhood is the focus this time, and the City is inviting current residents, businesses and property owners to contribute to the vision that will guide future development of the neighborhood. According to the City,

The MLK neighborhood on Tacoma’s Hilltop is well positioned for economic revitalization and densification and is one of the City’s 16 mixed-use centers that are identified in the City’s Code as Transfer of Development Rights (TDR) receiving areas.

This meeting comes early in the “economic revitalization and densification” planning conversation, which will continue over the next 12 to 18 months as the City and stakeholders identify priorities, challenges and direction for the shape of things to come in the neighborhood. This is your chance to learn more about the EIS scoping period and process, see the plans as developed thus far, and to sign up to be involved in ongoing planning efforts. Once the plan is completed, appeals of compliant developments will be limited, so speak now, or be prepared to hold your tongue if the development doesn’t shape up the way you’d like to see it.

If we’re talking economic revitalization and densification, what priorities top your list? Is there anything you’d like to see the plan prohibit?

When: Thursday, January 5th, 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.
Where: The Evergreen State College, Tacoma Campus, Lyceum Room, 1210 6th Avenue

WTH – this meeting is scheduled at the same time that the Central Neighborhood Council’s regularly-scheduled monthly meeting will be happening at the Nature Center (6pm)! I just called and left a voice mail with the contact person in the Planning Dept. that they should reschedule this community meeting so the people who are actively working in this area can attend! This is about the poorest “planning” that I can imagine!

Of note, Planning Staff will be making a presentation to the CNC at their February meeting. The Febraruy meeting is a great opportunity for the CNC and neighbors to have a more in depth conversation with staff about this planning process. The Community Meeting is just the beginning of this year-long project. Stay tuned for future opportunities to learn more and get involved.
