More Yard and Garden Workshops

Yesterday we wrote about the upcoming Tacoma Neighborhood Makeover Week, but if you’re itching to get going on your yard work and other projects sooner than that, April is full of opportunities to pick up a little practical know-how.

The Tacoma Community Garden Program offers monthly free workshops on a variety of topics. April events include:

  • Soils: Prepare soil for vegetable garden success on Saturday, April 7, 10 a.m. at the TAGRO Office and Wednesday, April 18, 6 p.m. at the Moore Library.
  • 3rd annual Community Garden Summit at McCarver Elementary, on Saturday, April 28th.

The City is offering a series of free workshops through the Enviromental Services program throughout the month of April. This week’s pruning workshops are already full, but you still have time to register for the other workshops,

  • Apr. 14 – 10:30 a.m. – Yard Waste & Worm Bin Composting
  • Apr. 14 – 1:30 p.m. – Backyard Chickens: Getting Started
  • Apr. 15 – 1:30 p.m. – Rain Barrels: How to Make & Maintain
  • Apr. 21 – 10:30 a.m. – Solar Power: How it Works & Incentives
  • Apr. 28 – 10:30 a.m. – Residential Rain Garden How-to
  • Apr. 28 – 11:30 a.m. – Porous Pavers: Paths, Patios, Driveways

Oh, and one more thing; the City’s TAGRO facility is now open extended spring hours. You can stop by and shovel your own for free, or have it delivered Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., or Saturday 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Details at www.tagro.com

These sound like a great series of classes offered by the city. I’m especially interested in the class on chickens, and the class on solar power.
