Mountaineers Have a Couple Things to Celebrate
As the Tacoma branch of the Moutaineers club approaches the 100th anniversary of its first meeting on March 19, 2012, they have one more thing to celebrate: the century old club is beginning work on improvements and expansions to their building on North 30th. We read in the TNT today that the project, which has been a dream for a while now, was okayed last Friday.
Plans for the new and improved club house include a remodel of the 55 year old structure into a two-story building complete with three meeting rooms, an office/bookstore, and improvements to kitchen, bathroom, and other facilities. The original plan was to celebrate the new building at the 100th anniversary celebration this March, but the delay in permitting may put a slight kink in that plan. As we read last October in The Olympian, the original plans included a possibility of a climbing wall, and definite plans to work with other organizations to make the space a hub of activity for groups with similar interests. We hope to see both manifested in the final project.
Any club that can not only survive for 100 years, but grow and stay relevant for a century has to be a pretty special group. According to the Mountaineers website their first meeting was a joint meeting with the Tacoma Camera Club. 100 years later it seems meaningful that the group’s plans for the future include collaborative relationships and sharing of space with other groups in town. It’ll be great to see what they have in store for the next 100 years.
