Murano Sculpture Installation In Progress

A few days ago we noticed the base being installed. Today, the cranes moved in and the large sculpture by Costas Varotos is now being installed out front of the Hotel Murano. Broadway is closed at 13th while cranes assemble the piece.

When it’s done it should look something like this:

The Murano address is “you bet Erik B” creating a buzz of excitement and the “lobby bar-all new-ground level” hasn’t poured a beverage ! It shall and so will the new 4th floor restaurant for breakfast/lunch and dinner called BITE ! #1320 is about to explode !

City Manager Eric Anderson has said the public sculpture will help tie together the convention center, museums and theater district.

“I believe it will be an important icon for the City of Tacoma,” he said.

I really couldn’t have said it better myself. Now $800 a month 400 square foot studio apartments will be leasing faster than they can build them. There will not a person between Portland and Seattle, with the disposable income, that wouldn’t want to be part of this dream. This is what downtown was missing all along, and what a critical piece it was.

That’s why it’s a giant fish hook; to catch all the big fish. (At least it’s not barbed, so maybe they’re keeping the option to throw some back.)

Looks like they’re stopping work after a snag.

Ouch. Major snag with the artist here too. And such bad weather. Painful.

I think the piece will “work.” We will see. At least Tacoma is taking a shot at something instead of stagnating and it can’t really hurt anything (unless it falls).

i realize this comment is neither insightful nor constructive; however, i think the sculpture is kind of silly looking: sort of like a nose cone of an airplane.

Art is many things to many people, right Tad? For me, it looks like a glass half full…
