Mystery Company possibly to build large building materials plant in South Tacoma
Any high-dollar proposition becomes more interesting when the word “anonymous” is added to it.
A location in South Tacoma (157 acres near S. Adams and S. 56th, once the home of the famous South Tacoma railroad industrial shops) is on a short-list of Northwest sites under consideration by an unnamed materials company. The plant would employ about 150 workers.
Tacoma City Council was updated on the prospect yesterday by Economic Development Director Ryan Petty, given the possible economic impacts and the fairly significant road improvements the development would require. The company must announce its decision by June 30th.
You can read more about it at the TNT here.
When we hear “building materials,” we think Lego. Yes, we’re hoping the Lego company is considering building in Tacoma. Any other guesses?

We know they will use approximately 200 rail cars of “resin” to produce a product which is then shipped out by truck for use in the construction industry.

157 acres for 150 workers? Booooo!

The actual possible factory location will only take up 25-30 acres of this site on the very southern edge.
Even if the buyer chooses another site (and potential contenders are in B.C. and Oregon), we and BNSF still need to create this Northern Portal to the site. BNSF will build the road to heavy standards and also an internal site network.

The City of Tacoma even has a cover name for the program. They call it “Project Pacific”.

150 jobs on 157 acres is better than zero jobs on 157 acres. ‘Bout time something got rockin’ in that depressed and depressing area! No disrespect to the few existing shops that already dot that area….

The giant grassland next to the public utility building that spans to 56th doesn’t have 1-single business in it. Right now it’s a big, water filtering, wildlife habitat. Der!
It would be nice if someone would go into that “depressed and depressing” area and rebuild before they pave over all of that open land… for 150 jobs!

Is this an official statement from the South Tacoma C.A.V.E. Chapter?
