Native Quest

The old Commencement Bay Coffee space has been transformed into something new. Native Quest, a non-profit Native American cultural center is open for business. We recently caught a nice article featuring the center from Indian Country Today Media Network, explaining what the center plans to offer, and the niche they are hoping to fill.

… Native Quest is giving urban Native Americans a place to call home by opening a cultural center in Tacoma, Washington.

“There are urban Natives who own houses, have a job, have a car but they don’t have a reservation to call home today,” said Kathy MacRae Foy, Native Quest board president and full-time volunteer. “We wanted to create a cultural center where all tribes could share in a talking circle, enjoy dinner together, laugh and sing and watch theater presentations.”

Native Quest is designed to meet the cultural needs of urban Native Americans, through the body, spirit, mind and heart.

The bones of the old space haven’t changed; the tall ceilings and big windows we liked in the old coffee shop still shed light on an airy space with tables for reading and meeting, a performance stage, and even a cafe, along with meeting rooms, a gift shop, and book shelves of resources. The organization, which opened this fall has big plans, but they also need some community support. A visit to the Native Quest website yields a list of calls for volunteers and donations to help the organization find its footing in Tacoma. If you want to support the center, or even if you’re just curious, this might be a good time to stop by and see what they have to offer.
