Neighborhood Clean-Ups Scheduled for 2013

Here’s something from the City you may want to take advantage of: this year the City will once again partner with neighborhood groups on a series of community clean-ups.

Over the next six months, single-family and duplex homeowners and renters in 14 participating neighborhoods in Tacoma will be invited to remove unsightly debris and other unwanted items from their properties. Beginning April 20, on designated weekends those residents will be able to bring their unwanted items, with proof of residence, to dumpsters at designated locations within their neighborhoods for disposal by the City.

Last year 18 clean-ups brought residents out to work together to improve their neighborhoods, resulting in the removal of 472 tons of garbage from Tacoma neighborhoods.

This seems like a good model – maybe other services in the City be offered on a similar way? How about “neighborhood pothole filling day,” where residents show up with their shovels to be the labor, and the City brings the asphalt truck around…

Details on items that can and cannot be accepted, and the 2013 neighborhood clean-up schedule is now available at cityoftacoma.org/cleanup.

Before loading up the landfill, please consider Goodwill, Habitat for Humanities, and Tinkertopia (a local organization that repurposes items for art and education).

This really works. It’s amazing how much junk and trash piles up. The Jennie Reed Neighbors do a great job getting the neighborhood aware and on board and I’ve seen it work very well there.
