Neighbors To Help Sell Rogers Elementary
While not as visible as the Elks or the Winthrop, Rogers Elementary is another one of those properties that continues to come up… again and again. Kathleen Merryman has something on the old school in today’s TNT. The latest word is that the neighbors who have fought so hard to keep it from becoming a social service center and church are now looking to help find a new suitor. Good luck to you all.
Anybody want a beautiful historic elementary school with a view?

There is a public notice up on the City’s website to convert the property to a church. It just went up a few days ago. Perhaps the church is reconsidering selling the property?
Anybody else think that the neighbors will oppose just about any use other than a school? Perhaps it could be converted into a mental health care center for the residents of that neighborhood.

Oops, my bad. It’s actually a SEPA Threshold Determination to allow conversion to Destiny City Church. It’s on the Department of Ecology website in the SEPA Register.

I hope the neighbors are able to have the former school used as something beneficial.
Neighborhoods need to guard against government closing their firestations, schools, and post offices and moving them to remote suburban location leaving the neighborhoods vacant.

Unless an angel shows up on the Rogers School doorstep (along the lines of a private school, historic condo developer or McMenamins) McKinley Hill is about to learn a huge & hard lesson on the importance of zoning & land use.

There is no parking up there for a McMinnimans-type place. Not to mention I don’t think the neighborhood would like that either. There has to be a good use for it, though I don’t know it. I’ve been by it many times, the view is great and the building is interesting, though it is quite off the beaten path.
I think a lot of folks would have trouble finding it.

There is a ton of room for parking.. the football/soccer field, the kickball field, playground… ahh the memories. It is a shame the best elementary school EVER in Tacoma is causing so much debate.
