A New Center for Health Sciences at UPS

We are excited to see the University of Puget Sound announce today that it has received a $3.5 million commitment from Robert and Rebecca Pohlad and the Pohlad Family Foundation of Edina, Minn., toward the design and construction of a new Center for Health Sciences.

“We deeply appreciate the vision and generosity of spirit behind this magnificent gift and behind all that Robert and Rebecca and the entire Pohlad family have contributed to our campus, our students, and our future,” said President Ronald R. Thomas. “The Center for Health Sciences will bring under one roof new opportunities for interdisciplinary study, research, and clinical work, a combination not seen at any other liberal arts college in the nation. It will be a place where big ideas about the mind and body blend with the giving of individual care and healing, with benefits that will flow well beyond the borders of our campus.”

The Center for Health Sciences http://www.pugetsound.edu/chs is the centerpiece of Puget Sound’s 20-year master plan http://www.pugetsound.edu/masterplan.xml.

The new building is being designed by Bohlin Cywinski Jackson of Seattle. Construction is expected to begin in spring 2010. The facility will be located at the south end of campus, along N. 11th Street.

Things have changed a bit since I graduated from UPS … just a wee bit.

Woah, say goodbye to theme row!

  • Nick November 4, 2009

Actually nevermind, I was a block off. Though I guess there are eventual plans to get rid of theme row (if I remember right) which is a shame.

Does anyone know where exactly the new building will be sited on 11th street? Hopefully they don’t cut down too many trees. There is a nice grove of tall conifers over there.

This also gets the highly coveted and rarely given Altered Chords “two thumbs up” award.

Anything that contributes to education and/or jobs in Tacoma is a great thing.

As a graduate of the UPS School of Occupational Therapy , this is great news! The present building an old WWII type building is wholly inadequate.
Both the Occupational Therapy and the Physical Therapy programs at UPS provide therapy clinics for the community, serving individuals who are underserved by our current health care system.

Actually, it looks like it will be replacing the old OT/PT buildings, meaning it wouldn’t be touching 11th at all – does that look right?

Just a bit o’trivia for you baseball fans out there, the Pohlad Family of Edina, MN owns the Minnesota Twins.

Squid – is there a connection to Tacoma/UPS/health sciences?

  • Mofo from the Hood November 5, 2009

Any connection to the former Tacoma Twins baseball team?

  • Squid November 5, 2009

AC: not sure what you mean – the Pohlads made the gift for the center. The connection is their son went to UPS. Now, the real trivia question is that this is not the only current MLB owner with a close connection to UPS. Cup of Mecca chicken soup to first correct answer.

You’d think the Logger baseball team would be better.

    Sarah
Thanks for the update. That campus is so beautiful. I walk thru it every chance I get. It’s like having another city park, but one that I don’t pay taxes on.

Congrats to UPS for this addition to the University, and thanks to them for their thoughtful consideration in preserviing as many trees as possible.
