New Off-Leash Dog Opportunities in Tacoma

We know that many of you are dog folks like we are. So, this is for you …

Beginning this Thursday, Tacoma will have two new off-leash areas for you and your dogs. Both Mckinley Park and Point Defiance Park will offer approximately 7 acres of off leash goodness. McKinley’s area will be in the lower trail area. Point Defiance’s dog park will be in the former Madrona Day Camp along 5-mile drive.

Unlike a formal dog park, these off-leash “demonstration areas” are not fully fenced enclosures. That said, we’re still excited.

The McKinley area is beautiful and needs more use (save for the huge encampment down there last winter), but it’s also very close to the Rogers Park and might be noisy.

I’ll definitely check it out, but the Point Defiance Park is going to be the most popular.

A dog park for Wapato is funded and scheduled for construction next summer – in the Baseball diamond at the NE corner.

The area I think would be great is China Lake, off of 19th. No idea if that’s beeing looked at or not.
