New Website for Visitor Bureau

The Convention & Visitor Bureau for Tacoma and Pierce County launched a new website last month to help draw tourists to Tacoma and its surrounding environs.

We’ve always been watchful of how the image of Tacoma plays elsewhere. Looking at the 12 photographs that rotate on the top banner, we are decidedly urban, artsy, right on the water, and Mount Rainier is just a stone’s throw away. Not bad.

There’s a short video of Pierce County on the site, and a handy coupon feature with discounts (that locals can take advantage of too).

Seems sorta like Gig Harbor quietly beat them to the punch on the upscale shopping complex…

UP residents need to thank their council for making a smart business decision. The idea of having shoping within walking distance doesn’t really work if you can’t sell the condo’s. Although the future can’t be predicted the market will return and while they wait at least they won’t be making payments on structures they can’t lease or sell. Hold on to your $ in 08, we ain’t seen nothing yet.

How do I sign up to be the next “dropped developer” for the University Place Town’e’ Center? I’ll go in halvies with someone if they could help me get the contract. This is like not farming pigs or not growing corn for the federal government!

    The sky is falling!

That is a sad commentary on civic leadership… The developer takes on the carring costs, the city just got jumpy on wanting something to happen faster than the market would bear.

Christine! I’ll go in with you as the next developer! Let’s see if we can sweet talk the city into just a $1M buyout clause.

they must all be related to Tacoma City Council….

This was a big issue in the 2007 UP Council election. At that time the incumbents were being accused of being overly optimistic and wasting tax payers dollars. The incumbents replied to have faith and you have to be positive to realize the dream. (I’ve simplified both positions.)

After two of the incumbents survived by a combined total of 129 votes (out of some 16k) this is an unexpected change. (Note that Councilwoman Smith who talks of dropping the development is up for re-election next year.)

Who is responsible for managing this mess in UP? Is UP still considering changing its initials to ATM?

This is really sad. People want to live in UP, work in UP, go to school in UP and retire in UP. If there is not enough evidence to justify condos create office space, retail what ever. Just do something, that site is a mess and the last thing I want to do is live work and play in another just let it go until someone else has enough common sense or big buck to clean up someone else’s non- profitable mistakes. Condos would work great there if they are priced right. If you think you can build the Commencement in downtown UP of course your titanic is going to sink. You hit the actual cost of living. Why can’t these people get a clue? I want my tax dollars back. They cannot give me a sewer line because of the cost but they can just let this one go. Somebody with some balls and guts help us all.

U.P. wants a town center, not superficial optimism.

    CJ,
I think they’re trying to build UP Towne Center not LakeHood Town Center.

  • CJ January 5, 2008

There are no condos in the Lakehood Town Center just a bunch of stores that no one wants to try and drive around to. If they had condos they might have more patronage of the beautiful buildings they built. The police station (City Hall) is the best piece of Architecture they have and the place is still scary. UP needs to keep their condos on the ground, Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket and The ranch are great examples of what sells. Pemberton Creek is another story. We want a town center focused on what everyone who lives here can utilize. Trader Joes that you so lovingly refer to for DT, is a pain in the you know what to get to. The last thing we need is another grocery store. Three in ¼ miles is enough. We have a Hallmarks the old library was wonderful enough. Viva’s is a great clothing store, lots of movie rentals. What we do not have is Mama Stortini’s, sporting goods, book stores. A little diversity would be great. Just like Tacoma this is what the military would say is PPP
Sorry for going on and I really do not care if my verbiage is incorrect or my spelling is off. It won’t cost you 1.75mil.
