Nightlife News - Playing Catch Up
Here are a few bits of downtown news that we didn’t report last week:
The News Tribune wrote about a change and an addition to Jon Tartaglia’s portfolio of venues. First, Cans is going country. Cans at 9th and A and across the street from the soon to be vacant Russell Building will become the Big Whisky Saloon. It’s expected to be open on April 30th. Second, Tartaglia is also set to open Encore at South 11th and Pacific in the old Vault space. Encore is looking to fill the gap in Tacoma’s nightlife scene after the disappearance of the Loft and 21 Commerce.

Finally, in addition to these two places, the Surreal Ultra Lounge is set to open on April 30th. The Weekly Volcano took a sneak peek last week at the old On The Rocks space at 8th and Pacific – the one with Club Kokonut signs in the windows.

Anybody else want to open up here? There’s a great space right below Suite133 … anybody?

Cant help but get excited about this. I was a big fan of The Loft/21 Commerce when it first opened under Jon Tartaglia. It was a classy and fun nightclub and my friends and I had great times there. Then Jon sold it and it all went down hill. Sad.
I hope Encore is similar to the early years of The Loft/21 Commerce in that it’s upscale and a dress code is enforced.

All of this combined with Hell’s Kitchen downtown may change the deadness a bit.
